Jerry,
I don't think this is a noise issue, but a missed focus point. The violin looks sharp and not much noise, but as the DOF increase it looks more out of focus(as it should).

Hi Gerry,

Camera Canon EOS 7D
Exposure 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture f/2.8
Focal Length 55 mm
ISO Speed 6400
Exposure Program Manual
The exposure was correct at time image was taken.

This was taken at iso 6400 with no flash, all ambient light.
Post processed in lightroom 5.

I then had an 11x 14 print done at the local camera shop, and it looks perfect.
No one looks at a photo on a wall like you do on your monitor. You normally stand a few feet away.
Even then the noise is non existent.
I find that as long as it's exposed properly, noise isn't really an issue when i print.

I just did a test print, it didn't look the greatest, noise was visible, with the shot I posted I was at F1.8, 1/160th s, ISO 800 an a canon rebel T3i. It was underexposed so I am sure that had something to do with it. I'll have to work on a shot at higher ISO and get better exposure and do a test print.

Hi
Yeah, if you underexpose and then try to correct with exposure settings you can add more noise to your image.

Hey Jim did you color correct that dog photo? Id like to see if with a lot less yellow...that would be a good case to use a gray card as a starting point to ser white balance.

Hi Greg,
You are correct in the yellow cast. Here it is before it got the walmart treatment for saturation.

And here's after,

gir and kaylee by Jim St. Croix , on Flickr

I did the first one and showed it to my spouse-(oh oh )-and she wanted "more color". So i gave her more color.Too much color in my opinion.
I had both up on a comparison screen, in lightroom, for my spouse to pick which one she wanted framed for our friends, and she picked the saturated one. I relinquished control on this one for her.Sometimes ya just gotta.
